To tell the BCIC story, one must begin with the Care Van. The Abilene Care Van is one of a fleet of 10 Blue vans based in Texas. This van came to Abilene, Texas in March 2005 due to the efforts of Caring for Children Foundation of Texas, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, the Taylor, Jones, Haskell County Medical Society, the TMAF, and the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing (PHSSN).
Knowing the success of the immunization program depended on the community, a coalition was formed in 2006. The first coalition meeting, April 2006, was held at PHSSN. Currently BCIC consists of members from Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Way of Abilene, TJH County Medical Society, TMAF, Abilene Independent School District, Abilene Public Health Department, and Texas Department of State Health Services. BCIC is powered by doctors, nurses, accountants, college music instructors, nursing school instructors, secretaries, and others. The cord that provides unity is the need to provide preventive health to a population that has little voice to protect itself. |
